Would you like to visit the iconic Monument Valley during an unforgettable Southwest USA road trip? Make sure to check out these Monument Valley tips!
Monument Valley is one of the most iconic and breathtaking landscapes in the United States. Located on the Colorado Plateau, on the border between Arizona and Utah, this natural wonder attracts thousands of visitors each year from all over the world. If you are eager to explore this beautiful area, you have come to the right place. In this blog, I answer all your questions about Monument Valley.
What is Monument Valley?
Let’s start at the beginning, because what exactly is Monument Valley? Monument Valley is a vast area characterized by its unique rock formations known as buttes. These buttes consist of hard rock layers that resist erosion, making them rise above the surrounding landscape as monumental structures. The red color of the rocks combined with the dramatic silhouettes makes Monument Valley an unforgettable sight.
The land of the Navajos
Monument Valley is not only a natural wonder, but it also has cultural significance. The Navajos have lived in this area for centuries and have developed a unique bond with the landscape and natural environment. Each rock formation and ravine tells a story dating back well beyond the time when the first Western explorers entered this vast valley. Doesn’t it look extraordinary?
Monument Valley was the inspiration for the Wild West
Monument Valley is often associated with the Wild West. The iconic landscapes are often featured in Western films, television series, and commercials. Monument Valley’s majestic red rock formations, expansive desert landscapes, and endless horizons have provided the backdrop for countless Hollywood westerns and therefore have a strong connection to the popular imagination of the Wild West.
Filmmakers, including director John Ford, discovered early on the dramatic and scenic qualities of Monument Valley as a backdrop for their films. Ford made a series of westerns in Monument Valley in the 1930s and 1940s, including “Stagecoach” and “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon,” which helped define the image of the Wild West in American film history.
Since then, Monument Valley has become a symbol of the Wild West and has inspired many generations of movie buffs with its epic landscapes and romantic associations with the adventures of cowboys, Indians, and pioneers.
Monument Valley Tips
It’s helpful to know a few things before visiting Monument Valley. Therefore, I first share some practical tips for visiting this iconic landscape.
How to get to Monument Valley?
Most people visit Monument Valley during a Southwest USA road trip. I did this myself and visited Monument Valley during the drive from Page (Arizona) to Moab (Utah). To get to Monument Valley you need a car; there is no public transportation. As an alternative, you can visit Monument Valley on a guided tour.
How to get to Monument Valley by car
Let’s start on how to get to Monument Valley by car. It’s easy to reach from either Page or Moab.
From Page, the route to Monument Valley first leads you southeast on US Highway 98. After about 65 miles, turn left onto 160 and follow it until you reach the town of Kayenta. Here you can stop for fuel and snacks.
From Kayenta, continue your journey northeast on US Highway 163, a road that will take you directly to Monument Valley. Along the way, you’ll be treated to impressive views of the vast desert landscapes and iconic red rock formations. The total drive from Page to Monument Valley takes about two hours.
From Moab drive south on US Highway 191. You will pass through several towns along the way, such as Monticello and Blanding, where you can stop and get something to eat or refuel. Keep following the 191 until you reach Bluff. From here, take US Highway 163 south, which leads you directly to Monument Valley.
The further south you drive, the more beautiful the landscapes become and you will also see many cool rock formations. One of the most iconic rock formations is Mexican Hat, just before Monument Valley. The drive from Moab to Monument Valley takes just over 2.5 hours.
Visit Monument Valley on a tour
Alternatively, you can choose to book an organized tour, where transportation to and from Monument Valley will be arranged for you. This can be useful if you don’t want to drive yourself or if you want to learn more about the history and culture of the area.
You can arrange a Monument Valley Tour from several places, such as as a day trip from Sedona or Flagstaff. Another option is a multi-day tour from Las Vegas, in which you visit the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park in addition to Monument Valley.
How much is the entrance fee to visit Monument Valley?
Visiting Monument Valley costs $8 per person per day. Monument Valley is not a national park, therefore your America the Beautiful annual pass is not valid here. You can buy your ticket online or on site.
In addition, there are variable costs that you should also consider, such as accommodation, meals, and activities.
What are the opening hours of Monument Valley?
The visitor center of Monument Valley is open at the following times:
- High season (April 1 to Sept. 30): 7 days a week, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Low season (Oct. 1 to March 30): 7 days a week, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Closed on Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day (Jan. 1) and Christmas Day (Dec. 25
Opening hours and admission prices are, of course, subject to change. It is always a good idea to check the official website for the latest information.
What is the best travel time for Monument Valley?
The best travel time for Monument Valley is generally during spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). During this period, temperatures are pleasant.
In spring, desert flowers bloom and the landscape is greener, while autumn colors provide a beautiful contrast.
The summer months can be very hot, in which case you should be prepared for high temperatures. In winter, it is sometimes (too) cold and some roads may be closed due to snow or ice.
I myself visited Monument Valley in the summer (July). In terms of temperature, I found it manageable, but there was a strong wind.
How much time do you need for Monument Valley?
You need at least one part of the day to see Monument Valley’s main highlights, such as the Visitor Center and the iconic Mitten Buttes.
For more extensive exploration and to do activities such as hiking and jeep tours, it is recommended to plan two or more full days. Then you will have plenty of time to fully appreciate the rich history, natural beauty, and cultural significance of this breathtaking destination.
