Spain is known for its beautiful cities and rich culture, and you’ll find many of them in Andalusia. These are the most beautiful cities in Andalusia.
Discover the cities in Andalusia
Spain is a country known for its beautiful cities and rich culture. In the south of Spain lies the region of Andalusia, a region known for its beautiful cities and historic sites.
Why exactly would you want to visit the cities in this part of Spain? Well, let’s start with the unique mix of cultures that come together here. Andalusia was once the heart of Moorish Spain, and the legacy of that period is still evident in the region’s architecture, cuisine, and lifestyle. From the majestic Alhambra in Granada to the magnificent Mezquita in Cordoba, you’ll find traces of the Moorish past seamlessly blending with Spanish culture everywhere.
But it’s not just the history that makes Andalusia so special. They are also vibrant cities themselves, each with its unique character and attractions. Whether you want to wander the narrow alleys of Seville, enjoy flamenco in Jerez de la Frontera, or relax on the beautiful beaches of Málaga, there is something for everyone in this enchanting region.
I visit the south of Spain regularly and have therefore visited many of the beautiful cities in this region. In this article, I will take you along and tell you all about the most beautiful cities in southern Spain.

Seville
Seville is the capital of Andalusia and a city full of charm. It has a rich history and breathtaking architecture, such as the imposing Seville Cathedral and the majestic Alcázar Palace (Real Alcázar de Sevilla).
But Seville is not just an open-air museum; it is a vibrant metropolis where the rhythm of flamenco fills the streets. There is an awful lot to discover, such as cozy tapas bars, colorful markets, and beautiful parks along the Guadalquivir River.
Also don’t forget to explore the picturesque Santa Cruz district, with its narrow streets and cozy squares. Seville is a great destination for a city break in Andalusia.

Granada
Personally, I think Granada is the most beautiful city in southern Spain, there is such a nice atmosphere and there is an awful lot of beauty to discover. Granada is best known for the Alhambra, a Moorish palace that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This impressive structure attracts thousands of visitors every year.
But Granada is more than just its famous palace; the city is a maze of narrow alleys and cozy squares where buskers provide a fine atmosphere. Granada is also the city of tapas, as you get them for free with every drink. Enjoy!
- Hotel Tip: Granada Five Senses Rooms & Suites (3⭐) – Fine downtown hotel with a small rooftop pool. Some rooms have a hot tub.
- Must see: You can’t leave Granada without visiting the magnificent Alhambra.

Málaga
Malaga is not only the birthplace of Pablo Picasso but also a vibrant city with much to offer. What makes Málaga so special is its combination of history and modern art. Not only can you find the beautiful old Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress overlooking the city, but also cool murals in the Soho neighborhood. In addition, the Centre Pompidou Malaga’s striking colorful cube is also a sight in itself.
Furthermore, in Málaga, you can relax on the long sandy beaches and the many green parks.
- Hotel Tip: Room Mate Valeria (4⭐) – This is one of two Room Mate hotels in Málaga. This hotel is located in the Soho district virtually on the harbor. From the rooftop terrace (with pool) you have a fantastic view of Muelle Uno.

Córdoba
Córdoba was once the capital of the Moorish empire and this can still be seen in the city. The highlight of a visit to Cordoba is the Mezquita, a mosque-cathedral that is one of a kind.
But there is (much) more to see in beautiful Cordoba. The historic downtown is a maze of narrow streets, which makes it an incredible place to explore. In the San Basilio district, you can visit several richly decorated patios, and in addition, the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos with its lush gardens is also a must see.
- Hotel Tip: Balcón de Córdoba (4⭐) – One of the most beautiful hotels in the city. From the rooftop terrace, you have a fantastic view of the city.
- Fun thing to do: Visit the world-famous Meqzuita with a guided tour. This way, you will discover even more interesting details.

Ronda
Ronda is a city spectacularly situated on a cliff and punctuated by the famous Puente Nuevo, an iconic bridge. This bridge offers breathtaking views of the El Tajo gorge.
The old town, a maze of winding streets and whitewashed houses, exudes an atmosphere of romance and mystery, while historical sites such as the Moorish Palace of Mondragon and the imposing city walls bear witness to the city’s rich past. Ronda is not the biggest city in this list, but certainly one of the most beautiful!
- Hotel Tip: Parador de Ronda (4⭐) – Paradors are hotels that are always housed in unusual historic buildings. The Parador de Ronda is housed in Ronda’s former town hall, and from here you have spectacular views of the gorge and the Puente Nuevo. There is an outdoor swimming pool and a restaurant where you can eat delicious food.
- Fun thing to do: In the late afternoon, visit one of the viewpoints east of the Puente Nuevo. This way, the light is the best for you to admire the city on the cliffs.

Cádiz
Cadiz, one of the oldest cities in Europe, is located on a peninsula in southwestern Andalusia. It has lovely beaches, lively markets and historical monuments, such as the Cathedral of Cadiz and the Castillo San Sebastian.
What I personally found very interesting in Cadiz were the many historic towers in the city. These were built to keep an eye on the ships because they loved to trade in Cadiz. There are still 133 of them! It is highly recommended to climb Torre Tavira, the oldest tower, for stunning views of the city.
- Hotel Tip: Soho Boutique Columela (3⭐) – Cozy hotel in a nice location in the old town. It has a rooftop terrace and even a swimming pool (seasonal).
- Fun thing to do: Learn about Cadiz’s extraordinary history on a 3.5-hour bike tour accompanied by a local guide.

Estepona
Estepona was the big surprise during my last trip to Andalusia, what a lovely beach town! Not only has it a wonderfully long and wide beach, but also a beautiful old city center. This historic center, with its whitewashed houses and colorful flowers, is truly a delight to explore and occasionally plop down on a terrace.
In addition, Estepona also has a modern marina where you can eat delicious fresh fish in one of the many restaurants.
- Hotel Tip: Hotel Silken El Pilar Andalucia (4⭐) is a luxury hotel on Plaza de las Flores and a 3-minute walk from the beach. From the rooftop terrace, you have a great view of the city.
- Fun thing to do: Get lost in the colorful Centro Histórico.

Almería
Almería is one of the few places I have not yet visited in Andalusia, but it should not be missing from this list of the most beautiful places in southern Spain. Almería is not yet well known to tourists, but it has much to offer. It has beautiful beaches, a historic center with Moorish influences and the impressive Alcazaba fortress.
In addition, Almería is the perfect base to explore the natural parks of Cabo de Gata and the Tabernas desert (Desierto de Tabernas).
- Hotel Tip: Catedral Almería (4⭐) – Beautifully decorated hotel with comfortable rooms in an old 1850s mansion. It is in a beautiful downtown location next to the cathedral and has a rooftop terrace with a pool.
- Fun thing to do: Explore Cabo de Gata Natural Park on an unforgettable kayaking and snorkeling excursion.
Jerez de la Frontera
Located amid vast vineyards, Jerez is known as the center of sherry production. It is therefore fun to visit one of the bodegas and enjoy tastings of this world-famous wine.
But there is more! Jerez is also a hotbed of flamenco, with many tapas bars offering daily (free) shows. And if that is not enough, Jerez is also known for famous Spanish Riding School, where the ancient art of Andalusian horse dressage comes to life. And of course you can see Moorish influences again in this city, especially in the beautiful Alcázar.
- Hotel Tip: Hotel Bodega Tio Pepe (4⭐) – Beautiful hotel with an outdoor pool in a great location. You sleep on the grounds of Tio Pepe and have views of the Alcazar and the cathedral.
- Fun thing to do: Visit one of the spectacular horse shows, in which talented riders and horses demonstrate traditional Andalusian riding skills,

Nerja
Nerja is a charming coastal town known for its beautiful beaches and the famous Balcony of Europe, where you can enjoy spectacular views of the sea. Furthermore, it has a fine city center, where you can enjoy exploring the narrow streets full of white houses. You will also find numerous quaint boutiques and cafes here.
But the main attraction lies just outside the city: these are impressive Caves of Nerja, a huge complex full of stalactites and stalagmites. Absolutely worth it!
- Hotel Tip: Parador de Nerja (4⭐) – Located on a cliff with stunning sea views. It has an outdoor pool and you can walk to the center of Nerja in about 10 minutes.
