I stayed in several extraordinary accommodations when I traveled to Galicia. In this article, I invite you to travel with me through Galicia and get to know some of the most enchanting hotels in this region.

Casa do Castelo de Andrade

This beautiful accommodation is located in northeastern Galicia. Through winding roads, you drive further and further into the hills, until you arrive at a rural farmhouse over a narrow driveway surrounded by blue hydrangeas. Some parts of the farmhouse are more than 300 years old, and because of this, it has a special atmosphere. For me, it felt like going back in time.

Common areas

Upon entering, the friendly owner showed us several common areas, including a library with centuries-old books, a cozy living room, and a dining room with a long table. The dining room has a huge window on one side, giving you a beautiful view of the green hills.

The room

The accommodation consists of several buildings and has a total of ten rooms and each room is decorated differently. I was assigned a room in the main building. This one was very cozy and had windows on three sides, giving me different views of the landscape.

Although it was not very luxurious, the room (and bathroom) were fully equipped. The bed is very comfortable (I slept great) and there is an extra blanket in the closet in case you get cold.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served in the morning in the dining room at a large table you share with other guests. The food is incredibly fresh and made from local produce. The friendly owner can tell you a story about each dish.

Surroundings

Casa do Castelo de Andrade is located near the remaining tower of Castelo de Andrade and from here you have a beautiful view of the green landscape, the town of Miño (there is also such a tower here), and Ría de Betanzos. Good restaurants can be found in the towns of Miño, Pontedeume, and Cabanas.

The accommodation is also located near Fragas do Eume, a nature reserve which you can explore by hiking. It’s also fun and interesting to discover the monastery of San Xoán de Caaveiro in the dark forest.

Hotel A Miranda

The difference between the first and second hotels in this list could hardly be greater. Hotel A Miranda is, in fact, brand new. The modern building sits on a hill in northern Galicia, overlooking Ria de Ortigueira.

Common areas

The boutique hotel consists of two floors. On the first floor is a living room where you can grab a cup of coffee of tea. From the terrace, you can enjoy the panoramic view. In the back, there is also a breakfast room.

Room

The hotel has only six rooms and one suite, and they are all located on the second floor. All rooms face the front, which means all rooms have a gorgeous view.

The rooms are bright and comfortable. Next to the bed, there is a small desk, so you can also work (if you want) with a view of the beautiful surroundings. The bathroom is narrow but well-equipped. From the shower, you can also enjoy the beautiful view!

Breakfast

Upon entering, you are given a card on which to indicate your breakfast wishes. There is plenty of choice, you can get toast with eggs, for example, as well as yogurt and fruit, and you are allowed to combine several dishes.

The next morning, everything will be served in the breakfast room. And of course, you get to enjoy the view once again during breakfast.

Surroundings

Hotel A Miranda is located in Costa Ártabra a beautiful natural area with a jagged coastline, green hills and animals (horses, cows, etc.) roam freely here. It is a beautiful area to explore while hiking.

Make sure to take a look at Cabo Ortegal, the northernmost tip of Spain. In addition, it is fun to explore the picturesque town of Cariño, where you will also find several restaurants.

Casa Grande de Rosende

We head back inland. Casa Grande de Rosende is located in the Ribeira Sacra, a wine region between Lugo and Ourense. It is a beautiful mansion from 1511 and it feels like going back in time as soon as you step inside.

Common areas

The mansion feels more like a castle and you’ll definitely want to explore the amazing common areas. Upon entering, the owner greets you kindly and he will immediately show you all the beautiful rooms and tell you about the history of the place. It is like walking around in a museum, there are still so many historic elements and interesting artworks.

It is a bit of a maze, which makes this accommodation even more charming. The stairwell is already a joy to behold, then you have a spacious library (which is not only a great place to read but also to play games in) and there is beautiful a historic kitchen.

The dining room and breakfast room are in the basement of the building; giving it an interesting atmosphere. You can order dinner when you with your room, in the evening you get a delicious three-course menu with local products and a carafe of wine from the estate itself.

In addition, the mansion also has a large garden with a vineyard which is another great place to explore.

Room

The rooms are small but have everything you need. The bed is very comfortable, this is the place where I slept the best during my Galicia trip. Again, it feels like you are going back in time, as they are decorated with antique furniture. Don’t worry, there is a hot shower and even wifi.

Breakfast

Breakfast here is also a treat. It is a very extensive buffet full of delicious homemade treats, including cakes, bread, fruits, cheeses, and more.

Surroundings

Casa Grande de Rosende is located in a hamlet in the Ribeira Sacra. This is an area full of vineyards and thus a great place to do a wine tasting. In addition, you can take boat trips on the river and explore the area on one of the many beautiful hiking trails. There are not many restaurants close to the hotels, so it is recommended to book dinner in the hotel to make your stay even more convenient.

Parador de Santo Estevo

Parador de Santo Estevo is also located in the Ribeira Sacre. Paradores are very special accommodations owned by the Spanish government. They are hotels located in historic buildings such as castles, monasteries, palaces, forts, or mansions that have been restored and converted into luxury accommodations.

Paradores are scattered throughout Spain and established in the 1920s as a way to preserve and revalue historic buildings while promoting tourism. In the process, they are incredibly luxurious and comfortable.

Parador de Santo Estevo is a former monastery in a beautiful location in a forest on the outskirts of a cozy village.

Common areas

Parador de Santo Estevo is a huge complex where it’s really easy to get lost. Next to the entrance is an impressive church; inside the monastery are several patios and restaurants. In almost every hallway or open space, there are sofas and armchairs where you can sit comfortably. You can also see amazing works of art everywhere in the monastery. In many rooms you’ll find a sign with information, making it feel like walking through the history of the monastery.

In what was once the monastery’s wine cellars is now a spa where you can relax. There is also an outdoor Jacuzzi overlooking the forest surrounding the monastery.

Gastronomy is an important part of the Paradores, so the restaurant serves top notch food, well balanced and absolutely delicious.

Room

The rooms and bathrooms are spacious, luxurious, and fully equipped. My room had a special element, an old spiral staircase that went down. It was unfortunately closed with a window, but I would have liked to know where I would end up if I walked down the stairs.

Breakfast

Breakfast at the Parador was a treat with a huge and varied buffet. While you’re sitting down, servers are walking around taking orders for special dishes, such as eggs.

Surroundings

From the hotel you walk straight into the forest and hills, therefore it is a perfect accommodation for hiking enthusiasts. There are many hiking trails in the area. And just like Casa Grande de Rosende, this hotel is a great base for exploring the Ribeira Sacra.

From Parador de Santo Estevo, it is about a 35-minute drive to Ourense. This is a beautiful medieval town with many spa facilities.

Hotel Altair (Santiago de Compostela)

After the beautiful hotels in the country side, it is now time for a hotel in the city. Hotel Altair is a boutique hotel in Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia. Santiago is best known for its cathedral and the thousands of pilgrims who arrive here daily as is the terminus of the legendary Camino de Santiago hiking trail.

Common areas

Hotel Altair is a small hotel, and because of this there are not so many common areas. At the front of the hotel, near the reception desk is a lounge with a couple of couches. There are also several books to check out while you wait. A nice place to relax.

The space is split in two by the bookcase. Behind the bookcase are several tables and chairs, this area is used as a breakfast room in the morning.

Room

The rooms are quite small, but has all the amenities you need. There is a closet, a desk, and a small fridge. The bed is very comfortable. The bathroom is also small but has everything you need. The shower is great.

In addition, my room on the first floor had a patio with a small table and a few chairs. Surprisingly, you rarely hear any loud city sounds here, so it’s a peaceful place to relax.

Breakfast

The hotel doesn’t have a breakfast buffet, but when you sit down, there’s a menu you can choose from. They have homemade toast, cheeses and you can also get yogurt and fruit if you’d like. I chose several delicious items and was surprised by the quality of the food. You even get a large plate filled with fruit, you can choose whatever you like.

Surroundings

Hotel Altair enjoys a quiet location in Santiago de Compostela, just a few minutes walk from the busy city center. A must-see, of course, is the iconic cathedral, but beyond that, there is much more beauty to discover in the historic city. Head to Parque da Alameda for stunning views of the city and to Mercado de Abastos if you like to try some local products.

Santiago de Compostela is filled with good restaurants, and my personal favorites are A Horta d’Obradoiro and Restaurante La Clemente.

Hospital Real de Santiago de Compostela

This is the only hotel in this list where I havent’s stayed in (not yet, but it’s on my bucket list!), but it cannot be missed on this list of the best hotels in Galicia. Hospital Real de Santiago de Compostela (aka Hospital de los Reyes Católicos) is the oldest hotel in Spain and also one of the most luxurious.

It is a former royal hospital that is now a five-star hotel, and this is also a Parador. It is located on Praza do Obradoiro next to the huge cathedral. This is also where all pilgrims arrive after their journey on the Camino.

The historic building not only has an unusual facade but also four cloisters, beautifully landscaped courtyards, luxurious rooms, and a museum. It is definitely one of the most extraordinary hotels in Galicia.
